  • Covid cases in England have quadrupled since June: Study
    Covid-19 infections in England have quadrupled in a month since early June, a large prevalence study showed on Thursday, ahead of PM Boris Johnson’s plan to fully re-open the economy in two weeks’ time. Johnson said he aimed to end most restrictions on July 19, even though models suggested cases would rise, saying that he was reconciled to more deaths from Covid-19 but that life needed to return to normal. According to the research, led by Imperial College, cases were estimated to be doubling every six days amid the new wave fuelled by the Delta variant. Read more

  • Olympics to be held without spectators
    Fans have been banned from the pandemic-postponed Tokyo Olympics which will open in two weeks, following the announcement of a state of emergency on Thursday, Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa told Japanese news agency Kyodo.The ban was announced by the International Olympic Committee and Japanese organisers, reducing the games to a made-for-TV event. The no-fan atmosphere will include the opening ceremony at the $1.4 billion National Stadium, which is traditionally the most watched event during the Olympics.     The official global Covid-19 death toll has topped 4 million, about equal to the population of Los Angeles, according to data from Johns Hopkins University released late Wednesday. World Health Organization and public health experts have suggested the number, which comes nearly a year and a half after the virus was declared a pandemic, is still an underestimate of the actual count because of underreported or missed deaths worldwide.
